Netiquette is the only topic this week that I knew
something about. Just like in everyday situations, school and work your etiquette
will display your intelligence, beauty and worldly humor. This can also be done
online. My dad once told me, just because you don’t see eye to eye with someone,
doesn't mean you can't be civil. I thought that I had enough common since to
know when a copy right was going to be broken. After taking the quiz, I realized
how much I really didn’t know about the copy right rules and laws. Using 10% of
a song or only having so many days to use video for educational purposes,
sounds harsh to me. But just like the article said, it's not about money, it's
about control. Cyberbullying is a big deal, being a shy child growing up I know
how bad it feels to be bullied. Kids have more technology at their disposal
than anyone my age did. I can see how this may lead to a never ending torture. If
you're bullied at school you can come home to escape the pressure. But if your
being cyber bullied, it doesn’t stop when you're at home it happens everywhere.
There is nothing more enjoyable then being in a room
or conversation with positive people. When two people disagree about something
they should be able to talk it out without trying to hurt each other. This may
sound crazy but I've seen a conversation on Facebook turn into a really nasty
event. So I believe Netiquette is very important to use and share with your
students, maybe it will help them be a better learner and helper to their peers.
Cyber bullying is sad, kids who get enjoyment while picking on others need help.
Using programs in schools to stop cyber bullying would be amazing and letting
the students know that they matter is what we need to do as teachers. I do understand
why we need copyright laws what I don’t understand is why it's ok to show a
clip from an Encyclopedia CD but not the evening news. Yes I know that there is
a time frame where they both are acceptable, but I don’t see a reason for
limiting the use of news from any media source. The use of music in
presentations , the copying of a picture from a website and the copying of a
program from one computer to another without the proper rights, sound like
copyright violations even if you don’t know the law.
Thank you for informing me more about etiquette. Your dad gave your great advice because most of the time we won’t see eye to eye with everyone. People often thing that just because they do not get along with each other, they don’t have to be civil. Being “civil” is also part of being professional. And when you informed me that using 10% of a song or only having so many days to use video for educational purposes, that are quite harsh. Cyberbullying is a super big deal and not many people know it. There are so many hurtful things that go on the web and then it goes viral. That is nothing but bad news. Thank you for informing me of a few more things!

ReplyDeleteBrek, how are you? I enjoyed your blog and I appreciate the advice you shared about being civil. I learned also from an elderly lady at church to tell my goods to others and my faults to me. Which to me means give my flowers to others because you never know when someone might need one and tell me about those things I am falling short in. I think this will stop some of the meanness if we can be up front with one another about disagreements. One thing I do know is the internet is not the place to solve differences. I really reget hearing about the many lives that are affected by Cyberbullying and I hope the future brings great change as the world becomes more knowledgeable.
ReplyDeleteIn regards to the Copy rights and fair use quiz, I felt the same way when it was over. I have so much to learn. Just today I was in a situation where I needed to copy some pages or all of this workbook. And as it would happen I was talking to my husband about it. He told me that a certain company would not copy it because of copy right laws. I said here am asking these questions and that is what our lesson is about this week. Needless to say, I did not get the copies. I hope that your future finds you much more knowledgeable in this area as you continue your education.

Great post! I totally agree with what you said your Dad told you. My mother was always a great inspiration in telling me, "if you have nothing nice to say, don't say it at all," or my favorite "they are just word, your not bleeding." I didn't know what that meant as a young child, especially one that had friends, but always stood on the side of caution when speaking. Netiquette I feel is very important and keeps many people for saying, doing or posting the wrong thing that might offend another.
ReplyDeleteIn regards to your comment about copyright information, the line is thin, but its very controlled as you said by the law. I'm an art student at Commerce and as an artist I copy from the master artist to get a sense of medium and technique. Am I liable for copyrighting? Even though I don't keep the images I download, because I won't need them when I'm through with my work. It is still somewhat a bit fuzzy as to what is black and white. Sorry for the short story.
