Web 2.0

Web 2.0 technology is an amazing way of sharing and reflecting back and forth with your students. Wiki's, to me, seem to be the best way to get information flowing from one student to another. As a mathematics teacher I would like to set up a Google site with formulas and homework. This would give the student somewhere to find information that they might have missed in class. I would also like to link my site to a wiki so they could discuss the problems on their homework, and or any other subject for that matter. I believe that web 2.0 is changing the way students learn in a good way, and hope to utilize it in the best way. I believe this would be very informative to the teacher because they could track their students understanding of the subject matter and not rely on the question, "any questions?" Because we all know how fun it is to tell your classmates that you don’t get it.

  1. I like that you found some of the same things interesting. I didn’t think that I would ever like the idea of using a Wiki to share and spread information, but I do. I think it is also changing the way the students learn. I like that the technology that it brings in!!

  2. Hi Brek,

I'm glad you saw some things on wikis that I didn't. It may actually be a good way for students to catch up if they are either a bit behind on the subject in class or if they are absent and need to know what they missed. That was a very good point. I was a little bit concerned on how wikis would fare as far as sharing "credible" information in a math class, but you are right: teachers can not only see the progress of their students, but also detect some mathematical misconceptions that they may have, and correct those as early as possible.

  3. Brek. I also liked Wiki. It does seem like a good way to get kids to write and socialize with one another. I think that Web 2.0 is another way to enhance teaching and learning for today and for the future. My thing is getting familiar with all the tools and what is the best way to introduce them in the classroom. Great Job! Andrea Grimes

  4. I also like the idea of incorporating a wiki in my class. I never thought about using it to keep the students up to date on material they may have missed due to an absence. This is an excellent idea and one I hope to remember when I enter the classroom.

  5. I too think a WIKI for peer interaction is a great idea!! I seldom reply to the "Any questions?" part of a class. And of course, monitoring by the teacher (thru the WIKI) is a good way for informal assessments as well as immediate feedback on lesson delivery...VERY important in the math education field!!

  6. I really love your idea for creating a Google site to contain all the information for your class. Math requires knowing a lot of different formulas plus notes on how to do certain things could really help students. The only downside might be crippling the students from taking their own notes. I think it would be great to have a Wiki page where the students could share notes and thoughts with your supervision to make sure the information they are exchanging is accurate.
